Facts on Moosehead Lake
By David, Gabe, & Greg

Moosehead Lake is 1,000 feet about sea level. It is the biggest lake in Maine. It is 18 miles wide and 40 miles long. It has 500 miles of shoreline, including the islands.

From 1835 to the 1930’s it was used for travel. There are mountains which rise above the lake water. Moosehead Lake covers about 120 square miles (311 square kilometers) in the west central part of the state. It wasn’t until the 1700’s that the first white people came to the Moosehead Lake region.

If you go fishing in the lake you can catch trout, salmon, and togue. On Kineo you can find arrowheads and flint and, if you are lucky, you can find old arrows used by the indians.

Many artifacts have been found that are from 3,000 to 6,000 years ago from the Red Paint People on Mt. Kineo. Many indians came to Kineo for flint, including the St. Francis, Norridgewocks, Abnaki, Delaware, Mohawk and Iroquois.

Come see our glorious lake and the spectacular Mount Kineo.
