Steamboats on Moosehead Lake
By Joel & Jayson

From 1846 to 1938 steamboats were used on the lake for transportation to Kineo and other parts of the lake. They were also used for transporting farming goods to Kineo (a resort area on the lake).

Records show that a boat called the Amphitrite was the first steamboat on Moosehead Lake in 1846. A road to Rockwood and the destruction of the Kineo Hotel put the steamboats out of business.

There is still one ship left from the steamboat days on the lake. It is the Katahdin. The Katahdin made its last run for the Coburn Streamboat Company in 1938. It is now used as a cruise ship on Moosehead lake.
