Poetry
The Lands of Sebago Lake Legends, Lore, and Loons
(collected by JC and AC)

About Sebago

"Around Sebago's lonely lake
There lingers not a breeze to break
The mirror which its water make

The solemn pines along its shore,
The firs which hang it gray rocks o'er
Are painted on the glassy floor"

John Greeleaf Whittier

The Crooked River (linking Sebagro Lake and Brandy Pond)
"Nowhere such a devious stream
Save in fancy or in dream,
Winding slow through brush and brake
Links together lake and lake"

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Funeral Tree of the Sokokis (Of the death of the Sokokis Chieftain Polin, wounded in battle)

"and there the fallen chief is laid,
In tasselled garb of skins arrayed
And girded with his wampum-braid.

The silver cross he loved is pressed
Beneath the heavy arms, which rest
Uponhis scarred and naked breast.

Tis done the roots are backward sent,
The beechen-tree stands up unbent---
The Indians' fitting monument.

Yet heaven hath angels watching round
The Indian's lowliest forest mound
And they have made it holy ground.

John Greenleaf Whittier

The Loon

The loons shine under the sun so graceful with peace.
Hovering over the lake with their shiny wings.
Eating fish across the lake day in and day out.

Lying around across the lake floating peacefully.
On the lake shores rumaging around for any left piece of food people leave lying around.
On the water diving in and out looking for lunch.
Nothing bothering them while they swim around the magnificient lake.

Sebago Lake

Oh, the beauty
Of Sebago Lake
I stand on the shore
It is day break

The sweet smell
The cool air
An inspiration
Which I must share

A high wall of trees
And blooming flowers
I only wish
I could stay for hours

The scurry of chipmunks
A swarm of bees buzz
The chirping of birds
That is what nature does

I feel free.
I want to fly
I stand there, still
As the time goes by

A lake so big
So clean and deep
My breath is taken away
My voice must keep

Great Sebago Lake
So gentle and blue
I have no idea
What I'd be without you

You help many people
You are close to my heart
Every day you give to nature
We cannot part

I feel the sand
Between my toes
I want to stay
I will not go

Oh, the beauty
Of Sebago Lake
I stand on the shore
My soul you take.

LAKES

Smooth sparkling water
Calm smooth water
birds in the air
sun at the horizon
as the sun slips away
As the night falls
it starts to move
Then faster and faster
dark and scary
Not so smooth
Light streaks across the sky
and the wind blows
The birds long gone
the sky black and cloudy
it goes on and on just as dawn breaks
it smoothes out
birds come out again
smooth and calm water
The lake is back again.
