During the academic year we work with middle schools. Our Lake Science Education Program includes teacher workshops, classroom winter visits, our signature boat program and our acclaimed Students' Portal distance learning initiative.

The classroom and fieldwork introduces students to the basics of lake science including the ecology of the watershed and issues impacting water quality. This science is taken a step further with a curriculum that addresses not just the fauna and flora of the watershed but the human community as well. At the end of our program our students understand the interaction of the economy and the environment.

In addition to fieldwork, we have established a state-of-the-art internet-based resource. Our Students' Portal dissolves geographic distance and connects students around the state as they engage in multi-disciplinary project based and service learning initiatives. The State of Maine has showcased our Students' Portal as an example of how technology can transform education.

ATTENTION EDUCATORS!

We are inviting you to become a partner with MLCI and participate in our award-winning Lake Science Education Program. Our goal is to create a sense of stewardship towards Maine's lakes among Maine's youth and communities. Our program package offers an annual teacher training retreat, in-class winter school visits, training and access to our Students' Portal, an internet-based distance learning initiative, and an annual trip on our floating classroom, the Melinda Ann. Our 30-foot pontoon boat is outfitted with scientific equipment to investigate diverse aspects of lake ecology. It is no surprise that students have greatly enjoyed their interaction with us and that the boat trip is always a highlight. We are proud that the Maine Learning Technology Initiative has endorsed our educational programs, calling our 21st century, project-based programs "transformative."
