Welcome to the Lake Science Summer Academy Home Page!
From July 23, 2007 through July 27, 2007, 15 science educators from 5 Northeast states as well as 2 educators from the Archangelsk Region of Russia participated in the Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute's first Lake Science Academy. The Academy, funded through a grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation, was held at Camp Kieve's lakeside Kennedy Learning Center. The shorefront setting, coupled with the availability of MLCI's 30' floating classroom (pontoon boat & extensive gear), canoes, and kayaks facilitated on-the-water discovery.
The hands-on, place based, service conscious academy engaged participants and introduced them to not only ecological theories but to practicing scientists who research and steward lake resources. The academy raised high school science teachers' awareness about threats to lakes and informed them about initiatives and service learning projects that promote lake stewardship.
The online question and answer postings shown here on the MLCI Lake Science web page are in essence a collaborative tool intended to extend the learning process between scientists and educators while simultaneously allowing the public to discover more about lake science.
